John Francis Anthony Pastorius III (Norristown, 1 de diciembre de 1951− Fort Lauderdale, 21 de septiembre de 1987), conocido como Jaco Pastorius, fue un bajista, compositor y arreglista estadounidense de funk,jazz fusión y jazz.

Pese a ser autodidacta, Pastorius tomó un instrumento hasta entonces relativamente nuevo, el bajo eléctrico, cuyo papel hasta ese momento por lo general era de acompañamiento y permanecía en un segundo plano dentro de las bandas de música pop. Artesanalmente extrajo los trastes de su propio bajo eléctrico, un Fender modelo Jazz Bass de 1962, transformándolo en un fretless, variedad del bajo hasta el momento poco conocida y utilizada, cuya sonoridad es más similar a la del contrabajoacústico. Otra modificación que fue decisiva para su sonido fue el de sustituir las habituales cuerdas de entorchado plano utilizadas hasta entonces en los bajos fretless, por cuerdas de entorchado redondo, consiguiendo un mayor sustain.

Con esta nueva sonoridad, su innovadora técnica de digitación, la particular posición de su mano derecha, entre otras cosas, conseguiría llevar al bajo eléctrico a un nuevo nivel interpretativo, usándolo tanto para acompañar como para tocar melodías principales e improvisar,¹ ya que en aquella época eran roles casi exclusivos de instrumentos solistas como la guitarra eléctrica, la trompeta, el saxofón y el piano.

Por lo anterior, a Jaco se le considera como uno de los bajistas más influyentes en la historia del bajo eléctrico.
